Library of Congress

A few years ago a librarian friend, Cathy McCall introduced me to the digital photo archives on the Library of Congress web site. Perusing the millions of photos available there planted the seed for my proposal to the Lilly Foundation Teacher Creativity Fellowship. I found myself longing for an opportunity to immerse myself in the act of capturing time with a camera in the way that has been done by generations before me.

The Journey

My journey on U.S. Highway 40 from Atlantic City, NJ to Park City, Utah, allowed me to document Americana as a pictorial American picker. Highway 40 has been an integral part of my life. When I was young we used to travel on it for many family vacations and for the past 30 years I have lived on Highway 40. I have recently noticed that businesses that once flourished in many places are now a shell of what they used to be. I used those shells as building blocks for my photographic journey.

Art Education

I was an art teacher for over 40 years. I taught all levels from Pre-K to Higher Ed. I have an EdD in Curriculum and Instruction in Art Education. I am making it my retirement goal to share those years of work in art curriculum to fellow art teachers. This web site is a resource that can be used freely. Feel free to borrow anything and access resources. You may alter and adapt any of the ideas for use in your classroom. I may add some affiliate links to provide you with access to the locations where materials may be acquired.
This web site is set up using the elements and principles of art as a way of organizing content. None of the assignments or lessons are grade specific and might be modified for students at any grade level. Most of the lessons are cross referenced in different sections.
