Photography and The Road Less Traveled I have loved photography since I was a child. The instant Polaroid images of my youth have given way to today’s digital photography. Even though I am not a digital native I am passionate about technology and the use of it as an art medium. I continually study digital photography and trends in the media through a variety of subscriptions, online sources, and considerable research as a part of that passion and for the sake of my students. |
Library of CongressA few years ago a librarian friend, Cathy McCall introduced me to the digital photo archives on the Library of Congress web site. Perusing the millions of photos available there planted the seed for my proposal to the Lilly Foundation Teacher Creativity Fellowship. I found myself longing for an opportunity to immerse myself in the act of capturing time with a camera in the way that has been done by generations before me.

The JourneyMy journey on U.S. Highway 40 from Atlantic City, NJ to Park City, Utah, allowed me to document Americana as a pictorial American picker. Highway 40 has been an integral part of my life. When I was young we used to travel on it for many family vacations and for the past 30 years I have lived on Highway 40. I have recently noticed that businesses that once flourished in many places are now a shell of what they used to be. I used those shells as building blocks for my photographic journey.

Photo AbstractionsI am fascinated with patterns, color harmonies, and mathematical principles of natural objects. I use photographs and alter the images to enhance the color and abstract the object. Altered images are then used to create symmetrical designs and patterns.
